Xitou travel guide: forest walks, an overnight base and local meals
Xitou is a forest visit with room to slow down. National Taiwan University’s managed woodland combines tall trees, planted groves and walking routes with places to pause, while the damp mountain setting can turn a clear view into mist. Staying near the park entrance leaves the walking day less dependent on a hurried return connection.

- Suggested time
- 1 forest day; an overnight stay reduces pressure on the return journey
- Where to stay
- Near the Xitou park entrance for forest access; Lugu for a stay that includes a separate restaurant stop
- Season and timing
- The national tourism source describes a cool, damp setting with plentiful rain. Bring rain protection and choose walking routes according to current weather and operator notices.
The short answer
Stay one night near Xitou’s park entrance, giving the following day to open forest walks and University Pond’s surroundings, with a Lugu meal before or after the park. Choose routes on the day rather than promising every landmark in advance. When checked on 8 October 2026, the University Pond bamboo bridge was under replacement with completion expected in mid-October, and the Rainbow Bridge Trail was only partly open. Those are reasons to keep a flexible walking plan, not to abandon the wider forest visit. A day trip is also possible when the current Taichung bus timetable leaves enough time for the return.
Arrive with the return journey already in view
The park operator lists buses from Taichung and the Taichung high-speed rail area to Xitou, alongside other regional services. Compare the current timetable with your actual arrival point: downtown Taichung and the high-speed station are different places. For a day trip, decide which return service you intend to use before the forest walk begins.
An overnight near the park entrance makes more sense when you want an unhurried morning or prefer not to build the entire visit around the final bus. Lugu is another base for a trip that includes local restaurants, but check the connection from the chosen accommodation to Xitou. A town name alone does not establish an easy walk to the entrance.
Let the managed forest be the main attraction
Xitou belongs to National Taiwan University’s experimental forest. The national tourism account describes a landscape of deliberately planted woodland, with a smaller preserved area of natural broadleaf forest. This helps explain the combination of forest scenery and educational routes: the visit is about looking closely at a living, managed landscape rather than assuming every grove is untouched old growth.
University Pond provides a natural focus for the lower forest visit, while bamboo and ginkgo areas add different textures to the walk. Choose a route that fits the weather and your walking ability, then leave space for a rest. Park paths and more demanding mountain routes should not be treated as interchangeable, and a marked closure is a reason to change the plan.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Bamboo shoots with pork
Hoyaku’s bamboo-shoot menu lists bamboo shoots cooked with pork, a substantial shared dish.
- Where to look
- Lugu restaurants on the Xitou approach, including Hoyaku’s current menu.
- Fit it into your day
- Share it as the main dish of a sit-down lunch or dinner.
Contains pork; ask about the sauce, seasoning and portion size.
Salted pan-fried trout
Pan-fried salted trout appears among Hoyaku’s recommended dishes, alongside other trout preparations.
- Where to look
- A restaurant meal in Lugu rather than assuming availability inside the forest.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose one fish dish for the table, with rice or vegetables alongside.
Contains fish and may retain bones; check preparation and any sauce ingredients.
Sweet-potato rice
Rice with sweet potato is listed among Hoyaku’s recommended dishes and can accompany the shared meal.
- Where to look
- Lugu restaurant menus, including Hoyaku.
- Fit it into your day
- Use it as the meal’s rice dish rather than ordering several heavy mains.
Ask how it is prepared if you need a vegetarian meal or have ingredient restrictions.
Check the pond bridge and trail restrictions before setting out
The operator’s notice dated 30 August 2026 says the University Pond bamboo bridge is being replaced, with completion expected in mid-October. When checked on 8 October, the notice still warned visitors away from the construction area and closed sections. Enjoy the accessible surroundings according to local signs; an expected completion date is not confirmation that the bridge has reopened.
A separate operator notice says the Rainbow Bridge Trail is only partly open because fallen trees have not yet been fully removed. Stay outside fenced closures rather than trying to finish a route through them. The adult admission listed on the current operator page was NT$250, with entry from 07:00 and no further entry after 17:00, checked on 8 October 2026. Recheck tickets and conditions before travelling.

Make room for a Lugu meal and a gentle finish
The park lists food outlets and local-product shops, with operating arrangements set by the individual businesses. For a fuller meal, Lugu restaurants offer another way into the area. Hoyaku’s actual menu supports bamboo shoots with pork, salted pan-fried trout and sweet-potato rice; these are restaurant dishes on the wider Xitou–Lugu route, not a promise that every park kiosk serves them.
Keep the meal on the same side of the day as your transport connection, so that a restaurant stop does not quietly become a second excursion. Ask about portions when dining alone, since several dishes are designed for sharing. The Viator search results did not identify a suitable Taiwan Xitou product; a similarly named hiking tour was in Guangzhou, China, and has been excluded.

Practical questions
Can I visit Xitou as a day trip from Taichung?
The operator lists bus connections from Taichung and the high-speed rail area. Check current departures and the return service before committing to a day trip; an overnight near the entrance leaves more room for the forest walk.
Is University Pond’s bamboo bridge open?
On 8 October 2026, the operator’s replacement-work notice remained in place, with completion expected in mid-October. Follow signs around the accessible pond area and do not treat the expected date as proof of reopening.
Can I walk the whole Rainbow Bridge Trail?
The operator notice says only part of the trail is open because fallen trees remain. Do not cross barriers into closed sections; choose an alternative open route on the day.
What does admission cost and when can I enter?
The operator listed adult admission at NT$250, entry beginning at 07:00 and no further entry after 17:00, checked on 8 October 2026. Recheck the current ticket page; the afternoon discount shown for April–September 2026 had already ended.
