Chishang overnight: rice-field cycling, Dapo Pond and tofu
Chishang is a place to let a rice-field outing and a town meal take their time. Brown Boulevard opens towards the mountains, while Dapo Pond brings the wetland landscape closer to the station area. Between them, the lunchbox tradition and a café serving tofu dishes give the countryside a practical food rhythm. An overnight keeps those parts of the visit from becoming stops squeezed between trains.

- Suggested time
- 1 night across an arrival day and a rice-field outing the next day
- Where to stay
- Chishang Station and Zhongshan Road for rail access and town meals; a confirmed countryside property for a field-side stay
- Season and timing
- The fields change with the rice-growing cycle; the national guide describes golden paddies during the autumn harvest. Choose the outing for the current weather and field conditions rather than expecting every visit to show the same crop colour.
The short answer
Stay one night near Chishang Station: give the arrival day to Dapo Pond and a rice lunchbox, then ride or walk Brown Boulevard before a tofu meal on the next. A town base keeps the railway arrival and meals together, while a confirmed countryside stay suits travelers who prefer the fields outside their door. Arrange the connection to Brown Boulevard separately rather than treating every attraction as one short station walk. Check the bicycle provider, weather and return train before settling the final outing.
Keep the station-town base and the countryside choice distinct
For a rail-led visit, the area around Chishang Station and Zhongshan Road is a concrete lodging option. The Tourism Administration’s accommodation register places Life Chishang at No.312 Zhongshan Road and describes the station in front and the farmers’ supermarket behind. Compare the actual entrance and luggage arrangements, rather than assuming every room advertised as Chishang has the same access.
A field-side stay offers a different setting. Inami’s own site places its property west of Dapo Pond, beside the rice fields, at No.162 Ren’ai Road. That is a useful alternative to compare with a station-town room, provided you confirm the final journey and meals. The recommendation is about where to base the visit, not a promise of a view from every room or an included bicycle.
Start with Dapo Pond and the town’s rice story
Dapo Pond is a natural wetland that the national guide describes as habitat for birds and fish. It offers a gentler arrival-day focus than immediately committing to a countryside ride. Follow the public paths and leave the wildlife undisturbed, letting the pond visit lead back towards a town meal rather than trying to turn the whole afternoon into a long circuit.
The Chihshang Lunchbox Museum adds a more domestic view of the rice culture. The county listing describes lunchbox history, side dishes, traditional kitchen stoves and farming utensils. Check its current visiting arrangements before counting on the indoor stop. The national pond page discusses historical fish and shrimp gathering but explicitly says those wetland ingredients are no longer used for cooking; it is not evidence that today’s lunchbox comes from the pond.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Chishang rice lunchbox
The regional authority describes lunchboxes in Chishang, Fuli and Guanshan with rice, a braised egg, dried bamboo shoots and other home-style dishes; the precise combination varies.
- Where to look
- Chishang town lunchbox shops; the Lunchbox Museum is on Jhongsiao Road and provides context rather than proof of every shop’s menu.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a box as the main town meal between the pond visit and the rest of the day.
Confirm meat, egg, sauces and other ingredients in the actual box; a rice-based meal is not automatically vegetarian or allergy-safe.
Tofu wraps
Taitung’s official art-and-culture itinerary names tofu wraps among the signature dishes at Chih-Shang Soybean Space.
- Where to look
- Chih-Shang Soybean Space, No.12 Tongshui Alley, Zhongshan Road, Chishang.
- Fit it into your day
- Use a wrap as a small meal after the field outing, checking the current menu before planning around it.
Contains soy in the named tofu dish; ask about the wrapper, fillings, sauces and any other allergens instead of inferring a fixed recipe.
Silken tofu pudding
The same city itinerary names silken tofu pudding, while the regional cuisine guide identifies Chishang’s tofu pudding among its local soybean dishes.
- Where to look
- Chih-Shang Soybean Space or a Chishang shop whose current menu lists tofu pudding.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a small pudding as a sweet finish rather than adding another full meal.
Contains soy; ask about toppings, sweeteners, nuts, milk or other additions. The name alone does not establish a vegan or allergen-free dessert.
Give Brown Boulevard its own walking or cycling outing
Brown Boulevard is a country road among the rice paddies, named after a Mr. Brown Coffee advertisement. The Tourism Administration describes walking and bicycle rental as ways to enjoy the mountain and field views. Treat it as the main outdoor outing on the second day, allowing the scene to unfold rather than making a single photograph the whole purpose of the ride.
The road and the station area are separate parts of the visit. Confirm the bicycle provider’s collection point, return arrangements and the route suited to your ability before setting off. Follow local access signs and leave farm entrances clear. The scenery changes with the crop and weather, so a shorter walk can be a better choice than holding to a cycling plan when conditions no longer fit.

Use rice and tofu meals to anchor the day and protect the return
The regional tourism authority names Chishang among the rice towns known for lunchboxes, describing versions with a braised egg, dried bamboo shoots and other home-style dishes. Taitung’s art-and-culture itinerary also identifies Chih-Shang Soybean Space on Tongshui Alley, with tofu wraps and silken tofu pudding among its signature dishes. A lunchbox makes a useful town meal, while the tofu café can become the quieter finish after the field outing; confirm the current menu and ingredients before ordering.
For the countryside connection, the national Brown Boulevard page lists Eastern Top buses 8165 and 8165A from Taitung Bus Station to Burlang Avenue (West), alongside arrival by TRA at Chishang Station. Check the actual departure point and current timetable rather than treating that listing as a guaranteed train-to-bus connection. From Taitung Airport, arrange the separate journey to the active Taitung railway station and a confirmed train to Chishang. The airport transport page identifies a terminal taxi stand; no direct airport train, fare or travel time is assumed here.

Practical questions
How long should I stay in Chishang?
One night gives you an arrival-day pond visit and town meal, followed by a separate Brown Boulevard outing the next day. Stay near the station for rail access, or confirm the last local journey for a field-side property.
Can I walk directly from the station to every attraction?
Dapo Pond and the station-town sights form a different part of the visit from Brown Boulevard’s countryside road. Check the final local connection and choose a walking or cycling route that fits your ability; no single compact circuit is promised.
Does a Chishang lunchbox use fish from Dapo Pond?
The national pond description discusses historical fish and shrimp gathering but explicitly says those wetland ingredients are no longer used for cooking. Ask the shop about the actual lunchbox ingredients rather than inferring a current recipe from that history.
Is there a direct airport train to Chishang?
No direct airport train is assumed. From Taitung Airport, arrange the separate journey to Taitung railway station, then check a TRA service to Chishang and the final hotel connection. The official airport page identifies a terminal taxi stand; confirm the current arrangements before booking a tight onward train.
