Samal: choose the actual resort access and crossing
Samal is an island stay reached through a separately confirmed Davao-side crossing and onward island transfer. The resort entrance and chosen pickup side matter more than a broad island name. Current official advice for the destination and access route is a prerequisite to the accommodation decision.

- Suggested time
- If proceeding after the advice review, give the resort or shore activity a settled stay with separate crossing stages.
- Where to stay
- Named Samal resort base
- Season and timing
- Review the destination and access advice first; sea conditions and resort arrangements govern the actual island visit.
The short answer
If proceeding after reviewing that advice, confirm resort or day access and the sea crossing together. Choose the main shore or resort activity rather than a rushed island circuit. Agree food and return transport before leaving the mainland, and do not treat a Davao city product as an automatic Samal booking.
Decide on the route before an island reservation
The FCDO advice checked on 3 October 2026 did not include Samal among the Mindanao island exceptions. Review the current destination and Davao-side access advice before deciding on the stay.
If proceeding, choose a resort or one island circuit as the main purpose. Samal’s tourism office distinguishes beach, central-adventure, northern eco-park and southern-garden themes; they are different route choices rather than an automatic full-island programme.
Confirm the resort and both sides of the crossing
Book against the named resort entrance and its pickup side. A broad Island Garden City of Samal hotel search does not tell you which Davao departure or island arrival your property uses.
DVO is the regional airport, followed by a Davao-side road stage, sea crossing and island transfer as needed. Discovery Samal advertises its own Davao Welcome Center transfer for a dining offer; that is resort-specific, not evidence of a public ferry timetable or transport to every property.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Grilled fish
A cooked seafood meal option, without a verified Samal-exclusive recipe.
- Where to look
- Ask the booked resort which fish dishes it currently offers.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a main meal at the resort.
Confirm the fish, cooking method and allergens.
Shrimp
Shrimp is explicitly listed by Discovery Samal’s Morning Catch.
- Where to look
- Reserve dining and ask about the current seafood selection.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a preparation for the main meal.
Shellfish allergens apply; availability is not guaranteed.
Crab
Crab is explicitly listed by the resort restaurant.
- Where to look
- Check the current Morning Catch selection and resort access.
- Fit it into your day
- Consider as part of a shared meal.
Ask about serving size, preparation and shellfish allergens.
Reserve dining with the island access
Morning Catch at Discovery Samal lists shrimp and crab among its seafood choices, with grilled, fried or steamed preparations. Ask for the current selection and table arrangements before planning a meal around a day visit.
A seafood meal here is a first-party resort choice, rather than proof of a unique island recipe. Agree whether food and the return crossing are part of the booked access package; a restaurant webpage alone does not grant walk-in resort admission or a boat seat.

Keep the return simpler than the outward plan
Give the main shore or resort activity time rather than spending the stay collecting distant stops. If adding another circuit, ask for the actual road route and a return to the resort or landing you will use.
Confirm the last crossing and the onward Davao transfer separately from an airport departure. If sea conditions or access arrangements change, shorten the optional activity and follow the boat operator’s decision.

Practical questions
Does a Davao airport transfer include Samal?
Not automatically. The road approach, sea crossing and island transfer require their own confirmed arrangements.
Is Discovery’s boat a public ferry?
The documented transfer is tied to that resort’s dining offer, not a general public service to every Samal property.
Can I walk into Morning Catch with no resort arrangement?
Public walk-in access has not been established; confirm dining and island access with the resort.
Does the Mindanao island exception include Samal?
The FCDO advice checked on 3 October 2026 did not name Samal among its exceptions. Review the current destination and approach advice.
