Tawau guide: a mainland town day and a separate park outing
Tawau can be a useful mainland stay with its own food and forest interests, rather than simply the road junction for Semporna. Choose a city meal and an easy arrival day, then give Tawau Hills Park a separate outing if forest walking matters. The park visit, the airport approach and an onward Semporna transfer each have a different endpoint. A night in the right area makes those choices easier to separate.

- Suggested time
- Choose the arrival and activity days after confirming the actual operator and lodging arrangements.
- Where to stay
- Tawau town centre / Sabindo; Tawau Hills Park accommodation
- Season and timing
- Check current local weather and official/operator access notices for your own travel dates.
The short answer
Arrive through TWU and choose an exact city hotel for meals or a separately arranged park stay. Use a full local block for Tawau Hills Park after checking route and access. A Tawau-to-Semporna road product is a transfer, not a forest or sightseeing tour. Read current offshore advice before adding an island departure to the mainland route.
Choose the town stay for the next morning
Decide whether the next day starts with a city meal, a park pickup or a road move to Semporna. Star Hotel’s operator gives an actual Kubota Bintang address; this provides a different area from the older central food district. Confirm transport to the meal and pickup you intend.
Keep the airport-to-room journey explicit and save the address offline. Do not choose a hotel solely because its listing says Tawau while expecting every town activity at the door. Arrange the arrival dinner before committing to another excursion.
A forest day at Tawau Hills
Sabah Tourism identifies lowland gardens and forest interests at Tawau Hills Park. Choose a manageable route with the park or guide and ask which paths are usable in the current conditions. Short forest walking and a mountain climb are different commitments.
The official tourism body says climbers should register for a Sabah Parks permit. Verify the particular route, guide and return arrangement if planning that activity. Do not turn a short city stay into an unconfirmed mountain expedition or guarantee waterfalls and every named trail in one day.

Make a town meal part of the visit
Nasi kuning, soto and bakso are specifically identified as Tawau food leads by Sabah Tourism. Haji Tamrin is a named nasi-kuning lead in its food guide; check present operation and the actual preparation. Choose a seated meal with time to enjoy it before the next road departure.
Sabindo is a tourism-board seafood-area lead, but an individual restaurant still needs its own menu and ingredient check. Ask about accompaniments and sauces rather than assuming a seafood label establishes dietary suitability or a price. The town meal and the park provisions are separate plans.

Keep Semporna and island decisions distinct
The proposed road-transfer product connects Tawau airport/city and mainland Semporna. Confirm whether its actual pickup fits your Tawau hotel and whether the luggage suits the vehicle. It does not include a visit to Tawau Hills Park or a boat onward.
On3October2026 FCDO advice distinguished eastern Sabah offshore islands/dive sites from mainland Sabah. Read the current wording and your own government’s advice before an offshore stay, and check the intended activity with your insurer. An ordinary mainland overnight is not an automatic island recommendation.

Practical questions
Is Tawau only a transfer stop?
A town meal and a separately checked forest outing can justify a mainland stay.
Does the Semporna transfer visit Tawau Hills Park?
No. Buy or arrange a separate park journey.
Are short walks the same as a park mountain climb?
No. Verify route-specific permit, guide and return requirements.
Does the offshore warning include mainland Tawau?
The wording checked on 3 October 2026 explicitly excludes mainland Sabah; read the live advice before offshore plans.
