The short answer
Use 2 nights in Kota Kinabalu, 2 in Kundasang and 2 near Sepilok or Sandakan: 6 nights over 7 days. Reserve day 5 for the actual cross-Sabah connection. This mainland itinerary includes neither an eastern offshore island nor a Mount Kinabalu summit climb.
Days 1–2: Kota Kinabalu arrival and a local day
BKI is Kota Kinabalu International Airport in CAAM’s glossary. Arrange the road journey to the actual city property; the tourism hotel list names city lodging such as The Jesselton Hotel.
Keep the arrival evening local and choose one city block on day 2. The linked capital-of-Sabah city activity is separate from island boats and does not provide the onward Kundasang transfer.
Days 3–4: Kundasang with prearranged local travel
Book the actual road arrival and town or Mesilau accommodation. Sabah Tourism notes limited local public transport; ask the property or operator for the exact vehicle and pickup plan.
If visiting Desa farm, the tourism page inspected on 3 October 2026 requires advance booking. Check the current session before arranging the day. This highland stay does not include or imply a summit climb.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Ngiu chap
Beef-based noodle soup described for western Sabah.
- Where to look
- Current Kota Kinabalu menus; named outlets in the source are not guaranteed open.
- Fit it into your day
- A city breakfast or lunch before the highland transfer.
Contains beef; check cuts and broth.
Kundasang BBQ chicken wings
Grilled chicken wings identified by Sabah Tourism in Kundasang.
- Where to look
- Current Kundasang town menus.
- Fit it into your day
- A highland meal alongside the confirmed local transport plan.
Check sauces and ingredients.
Nasi kuning
Turmeric-coloured rice with variable fish/chicken, egg and sambal.
- Where to look
- Current Sandakan menus before or after Sepilok; not a forest-centre meal promise.
- Fit it into your day
- A meal during the final mainland stop.
Check fish, egg and sambal ingredients.
Day 5: cross Sabah as a travel day
Arrange the actual Kundasang/Ranau-to-Sandakan road journey, or a separately booked flight route with every ground connection. A flight option must be checked against the actual airport and date; none is assumed direct from Kundasang.
Use the remaining time for property arrival and a meal. Treat this as travel-day room in the itinerary, not a promise of any particular journey duration.

Day 6: Sepilok visits chosen separately
The orangutan rehabilitation centre and sun-bear centre are distinct visits. BSBCC says they share an entrance but require separate tickets. Confirm the current arrangements before travel.
Sabah Tourism explains that orangutans may not attend feeding when they have forest food, and they must not be touched. Allow interpretation and observation time without guaranteeing a sighting. Food is not permitted at BSBCC’s observation platforms; only drinking water is allowed.

Day 7: the actual departure and regional check
SDK is Sandakan Airport in the official glossary. The airport field below records the BKI arrival; book the actual final gateway and property-to-airport connection separately.
On 3 October 2026, UK FCDO’s specific restriction concerned eastern Sabah offshore islands and dive sites from Sandakan to Tawau, including Lankayan, and excluded mainland Sabah. No offshore add-on is included here; check your own government and insurer for the actual journey.
Practical questions
How many nights does this seven-day plan use?
Six: two each in Kota Kinabalu, Kundasang and the Sepilok/Sandakan area.
Does the route include a mountain summit climb?
No. A Mount Kinabalu climb requires separate planning and reservations; the proposed highland stop does not include it.
Are Sepilok and sun-bear admission the same ticket?
BSBCC says separate tickets are required, despite the shared entrance. Recheck current arrangements before travel.
Are orangutans guaranteed at feeding?
No. Sabah Tourism explicitly says they may not attend when natural forest food is available.
