Lahad Datu guide: town arrival and a booked forest stay
Use mainland Lahad Datu for arrival and logistics, then travel with the exact Danum provider. The Studies Centre and Borneo Rainforest Lodge are different facilities and packages. Arrange permissions, accommodation and the permitted vehicle before departure. Tabin is another separately booked excursion, not an automatic component of a Danum itinerary.

- Suggested time
- Allow the arrival and booked forest-stay days specified by your provider; the offered Rainforest Lodge package is a two-night stay, not a town excursion.
- Where to stay
- Lahad Datu town / Harbour Town; Danum Valley Studies Centre; Borneo Rainforest Lodge
- Season and timing
- Check current local weather and official/operator access notices for your own travel dates.
The short answer
Use mainland Lahad Datu for arrival and town meals, then travel with the exact booked Danum property. Confirm the permitted forest vehicle and pickup separately from the airport arrival. A Rainforest Lodge stay, Studies Centre booking and Tabin visit have different accommodation and transfer arrangements.
Choose the base for the actual journey
Use mainland Lahad Datu town or Harbour Town for an arrival stop, then travel with the provider for your booked forest accommodation. Map the town property and confirm where the onward transfer begins.
Danum Valley Studies Centre and Borneo Rainforest Lodge are separate facilities with different accommodation and packages. A town hotel, Studies Centre booking and Rainforest Lodge package do not have interchangeable transfers or meals.
Town arrival and a booked forest stay
Arrange Danum permission, accommodation and transport before departure. Sabah Tourism describes access by registered permitted vehicles; confirm the vehicle and pickup with the actual property. Tabin is another separately booked destination.
As checked on 3 October 2026, the Rainforest Lodge operator reported temporary closure of some canopy-walk sections and a construction notice running through 22 January 2027. Ask what routes, facilities and activity alternatives are available for your dates; full canopy access and particular wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Laksa Johor
A fish-and-coconut gravy with spaghetti described by Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen in Lahad Datu; a separate vegan version is also described.
- Where to look
- Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen / HAK’s Farm-to-Table at Taman Hap Heng, by an accepted reservation only.
- Fit it into your day
- Ask whether laksa is part of the current seasonal surprise menu before booking; plan as a town meal apart from Danum.
Confirm fish, shellfish, coconut and all dietary needs. The operator notes possible allergen traces even with special requests.
Ipoh hor fun
Chicken-and-prawn rice-noodle soup on Secret Recipe’s national menu; a contemporary town option, not a Sabah-origin claim.
- Where to look
- Secret Recipe, Lot 9-10, Level 1, Linear Block B, Harbour Town, Lahad Datu. Ask whether this national-menu item is available at this branch.
- Fit it into your day
- A town lunch on an arrival or return day, before the separately agreed Danum transfer.
Confirm prawns, broth, portion and actual branch availability.
Nasi goreng ayam rangup
Chicken with fried rice and sambal belacan listed on the same operator menu.
- Where to look
- The operator-listed Secret Recipe branch at Harbour Town, Lahad Datu; confirm its actual menu before going.
- Fit it into your day
- A seated town main meal; not an included Rainforest Lodge or Studies Centre dish.
Ask about shrimp paste, egg, sauces and the ingredients relevant to your diet.
Meals and their correct geographical context
Choose a town meal that fits the actual forest pickup. Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen gives a locally situated Laksa Johor lead, while Secret Recipe’s first-party outlet page places its branch at Level 1, Linear Block B, Harbour Town. Its national menu lists Ipoh hor fun and chicken fried rice; ask that branch which dishes it serves before routing there. These contemporary choices are not claims of Lahad Datu culinary origin.
As checked on 3 October 2026, HAK’s dining page offered reservation-only seasonal surprise menus and no walk-in service. Ask whether laksa is available, obtain acceptance of the reservation and disclose dietary needs. This town meal is separate from the exact Danum property’s included meals.

Arrival and booking scope
Agree the Lahad Datu airport or town receiving point with the exact Danum property. Confirm the registered permitted vehicle for the onward forest journey; the town arrival and forest transfer are different legs.
Two-night Borneo Rainforest Lodge stay in Danum Valley, with shared return transfers from Lahad Datu Airport and listed meals. Not a town day trip or Studies Centre booking. Confirm current pickup, permits, meals and activities: the lodge operator’s 3 October 2026 notice reports partial canopy-walk closure and construction through 22 January 2027. Wildlife is conditional; live inventory and price were not checked.

Practical questions
Should I book a town room or a forest lodge?
A Lahad Datu or Harbour Town room suits an arrival stop. Danum accommodation is a separate reservation with its own permitted transfer and activities. Match the room to the actual pickup rather than treating every address as one lodge.
Can Tabin be part of the same Danum outing?
Tabin is a different destination requiring its own researched booking and transport. The Danum Studies Centre and Rainforest Lodge are also different facilities. Confirm one exact forest stay before adding another.
What should I know about meals?
HAK’s dining is reservation-only with a seasonal surprise menu, so ask whether its Laksa Johor preparation is offered. Secret Recipe’s operator lists a Harbour Town branch and national menu choices; confirm the branch’s actual dishes. Danum property/package meals are arranged separately.
What does the suggested booking actually cover?
A two-night Borneo Rainforest Lodge stay for travellers arriving through Lahad Datu, rather than a town day trip or Studies Centre booking. The product body inspected on 3 October 2026 lists lodge accommodation, shared Lahad Datu Airport return transfers and meals. Confirm pickup, permits, exact meal arrangements and current activities before paying: the lodge operator reports partial canopy-walk closure and construction through 22 January 2027. Wildlife is conditional; live inventory and price were not checked.
